Local archer prepares for Olympic trials

By JAMIE BROOKS/OBSERVER STAFF REPORTER

For some athletes, the peak of their career lies in the distant hopes of professional leagues, or even collegiate playing time, but Kendra Harvey won't settle until she battles to be the best.

Harvey, 19, is trying out for a spot on the 2008 Summer Olympic American Archery team for her shot at the gold in Beijing, China. She was the alternate for the team three years ago, and since then has been gradually preparing herself for the spot on the team next summer.

"I've progressively been building up since my year of sleep," Harvey joked, referring to taking a break from archery after the Olympic Games in 2006. Her laugh echoed through her home, and it was hard not to laugh along. Behind her were pictures, medals and other memorabilia of her success.
